Az a doktor Faust, akivel az olvasó a Fekete bársony című regény lapjain találkozik, vajmi kevéssé emlékeztet a Goethe által megörökített fausti emberre, akit a megismerés szenvedélye fűt. Zoltán Gábor Faustja a XXI. század eleji Magyarországon él. Értelmiségi. Kisember. Lúzer. Igényei szerények, tündöklése pitiáner, bukása szánalmas. Ugyanakkor nemcsak sajnálható, hanem szerethető is. Az ördög sem az igazság éles elméjű felismerője immár, mint Goethe művében volt, inkább egy középszintű menedzser és egy bírósági végrehajtó keveréke. Csöppet sem ártalmatlan, viszont legalább annyira mulatságos, mint amennyire nevetséges. Faust és az ördög viszonyán keresztül Zoltán Gábor fergeteges szatírát rajzol arról a világról, melyben mindennapi életünk napjai peregnek.
