The nobility played a particularly important role in the history of the Habsburg Monarchy at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was the social class that possessed the economic, symbolic, and cultural capital to consume, create, and promote the products, institutions, and events of culture and science. The German- and English-language essays in this volume examine how aristocratic families promoted culture and new scientific discoveries, how they used the arts to communicate their political goals, how they educated aristocratic children, created networks of relationships between families, and how these relationships were integrated into the world of the multi-ethnic Habsburg Empire.
