Sladek, Elisabeth : Ceremonies, feasts, costumes: Viennese Porcelain Figures in the Age of Maria Theresa
- description
- additional information
During the reign of Maria Theresa courtly life in Vienna was at its apogee, pervaded by the spirit of the late Baroque, the Rococo and the beginning of the Enlightenment. This also clearly manifested itself in the development of the porcelain figure. Time and again, the plasticity of porcelain facilitated the creation of new models for the figurines, and was a perfect medium for expressing the delicate playfulness that characterised the Rococo style. The intrinsic sheen of the material enhanced both the painterly and the sculptural effect of the individual figurines and figurative groups, making the porcelain figure the ideally suited medium for reflecting courtly activities.
