A Tao nem más, mint Isten egy másik neve. És ez egy sokkal szebb név, mert az "Isten" szó már túlságosan is elcsépelt. (...) Ebben a tekintetben a Tao igazán gyönyörű. A Taót nem bálványozhatod, mert képzeletedben nem személyesül meg. A Tao egyszerűen egy alapelv, nem pedig egy személy. Nem bálványozhatsz egy elvet - a Taóhoz nem tudsz imádkozni. (...) A Tao nem jelent mást, mint a mindenek fölött álló elvet, amely egységgé rendezi a mindenséget. A lét nem egy káosz, ezt biztosan állíthatjuk; a lét egy kozmosz. Mérhetetlen rend uralkodik benne, egy önmagából fakadó rend, s ennek a rendnek a neve a Tao. A Tao egyszerűen a mindenség harmóniáját jelenti.
