Select Bibliothèque, 1910 16to, 340 pp, pl. 25 (red ink printed) by 'Tack. The Select-Bibliothèque was one of several publishing houses specializing in fetish material that flourished in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century. Like the others, notably Jean Fort’s ‘Orties Blanches’ series and the ‘Librairie Artistique et Editions Parisiennes Reunies’ of Paul Brenet, the books of the Select Bibliothèque were published openly. Occasionally a title would cross some mysterious line and be prosecuted, but in general, since there was no sex in the conventional sense, these publishers were left to their devices by the authorities. Tack illustrated flagellation titles published by Select Bibliothèque between 1906 and 1922. Two other artists used by the publisher, Esbey and Selby, followed in the years 1926-1934 and 1935-1938, respectfully. Little was published between 1923 and 1925. What was issued contained unsigned illustrations. The artists’ styles are so similar it is difficult to determine whether or not they were drawn by the same hand.
